Competent Communication

A person that demonstrates competent communication is a co-worker of mine. Her name is Teri.  She is able to express herself as well receive information in a professional manner.  When she speaks she is not only articulate but she also exhibits confidence in how she presents herself.  When she engages in conversations she is respectful and will allow all to express their opinions. She will also ask to clarify something and not jump to conclusions.  What I most admire about her communication skills is that she has integrity.  She does not participate in the workplace gossip and actually handles such very well.  During a meeting in which our boss was being very unprofessional in regards to talking about someone's work performance without that person being present, Teri stated in a very professional and matter of fact manner she was not comfortable discussing issues without the person being present and not being able to speak for themselves.  In essence she put a stop to the gossip during that point and time.  Teri puts into practice the ethical principles of both the National Communication Association and the NAEYC.

  1. Rhonda - It sounds as if Teri has a very professional outlook. Not all professionals are aware of NAEYC, let-alone the Ethical Code. You are fortunate to be working with what sounds like an upstanding co-worker not everyone has the nerve to make a stand.

  2. You mentioned some very important ideas about professionalism in your post. Good for her for standing up for that person who wasn't there to defend herself. It is those small things that make huge differences in communications. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Rhonda,
Kudos to Teri. This is wonderful role modeling. As the Director, I am constantly having to cauterize gossip and point communication into a positive manner. It is so awful to feel talked about and I want to protect that all the time. I appreciate you observing this in your coworker as well. Thank you for sharing. I hope you are able to share this with your co-worker.

  5. Rhonda,
That is amazing that you are given the opportunity to work with a level headed colleague like Teri. As director, I am constantly working on my ability to communicate with staff members. As a professional, I feel we are charged with constantly working on our education and communication skills.
