I chose Voices for Virginia's Children as an organization that appeals to me because they focus on advocacy to ensure the children are Virginia have a voice and ensure the programs are in place and funded in order to support and provide children across the state with the resources and services they need in order to learn and grow in order to reach their full potential. This organization keeps communities and programs within those communities abreast of legislative changes that impact children. This organization lobbies for change by supporting new initiatives and bills that make positive impacts in communities across the state. They all lobby in order to protect programs from cuts or policies changes that could have negative impacts on communities across the state. To work with this organization one will need to have knowledge of various content areas that support children's health and development. The knowledge of the legislative process would be needed in order to advocate in the most effective manner. For more information visit Voices for Virginia's Children website: http://vakids.org/
I chose the Virginia Head Start Association, Inc. as an organization that appeals to me because I worked with Head Start for 12 years. Through my work with Head Start I have developed a wonderful network of colleagues that provide support for the mission of providing high quality services for children and families. Head Start is inclusive of providing comprehensive services to children and families. Head Start supports professional development for all staff. Head Start has a strong commitment to community partners. Those that share the passion of providing quality services to at risk children are able to join the work of Head Start. Head Start has provided what I believe is the ultimate model of how to support early childhood education and development. Even though I have moved on in my career I still rely on my network within the Head Start community. The mission of my current program is to support children and families that are not able to attend Head Start because of limited slots. Therefore the Virginia Preschool Initiative is a partner with Head Start within many communities across the state. We have a program that sounds similar to Smart Beginnings here in Colorado with a star rating system called Qualistar. I love the idea of Voices for Children, it is crucial that children who cannot speak for themselves have an advocate.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog and learning about ECE in Virginia. Based on the organizations you chose to highlight, it seems that you may have a passion for ECE advocacy. Is this true? What job opportunities within our outside these organizations appeal to you as you complete your coursework at Walden and move forward with your career?
Hi Celeste,
DeleteYes I do have a passion for early childhood advocacy. As far as job opportunities I recently changed jobs. I feel very lucky and blessed to work with a county that has many communities of practice in place in where I can advocate through my current position as the Director of the Virginia Preschool Initiative program for Fairfax County. I am not interested in changing my position anytime soon! I love my program and those in the community that support early childhood! I look forward to be able to bring challenges that I find to be very important to my new work environment where I feel I will be able to make positive changes within the field.
Thanks for your post!
Hi Rhonda
ReplyDeleteGreat Job on your post. The organizations you selected speaks to the heart of early childhood education; that of having high quality programs which would help foster the full development of children. I was immediately drawn to voices of children as I believe it is important that we advocate and speak out for our children.
During my such for organization I came to the realization that as we come across these organizations we can create a database or brochure with a list of these organizations, the services provided and their contact information. This we can then use as a reference in working with the families to help them become knowledgeable of the services and support systems that are available to them.
Thanks for sharing your organizations. We have a program here similar to Smart Beginnings called SC First Steps. SC First Steps and Smart Beginnings acknowledge the importance of early intervention in learning. Some children are not exposed to books and learning material until they reach elementary school. These two porgrams are wonderful groups to open their minds at an early age. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHello Rhonda! The smart Beginnings position is a interesting role in the ECE field. I am really considering these types of positions, I have 10 years experience in the classroom working with toddlers, I think it would be very interesting being on the other side of the table. Providing my knowledge and expertise to teachers to help them with developmentally appropriate practice. Good luck to you!
